NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An effective COVID-19 vaccine doesn't mean you'll be tossing your masks and no longer social distancing, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday during a Facebook Live chat with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy.

Fauci explained that the vaccine won't be 100 percent effective nor will 100 percent of the population take it, so there is a chance the virus can spread, he said.

"I think if we can get 75 to 80 percent of the population vaccinated, I think that would be a really good accomplishment," Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said.

"It is not going to eliminate the need to be prudent and careful with our public health measures," he said, referring the current protocols.

Referring to masks, he said, "There's good enough data to say that aerosol transmission does occur ... for a period of time.
