Off-duty NYPD officer dies by suicide in Queens: report

By 1010 WINS

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – An NYPD officer died on Sunday after reportedly shooting himself in Queens.

The off-duty officer was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital after shooting himself in the head at his apartment on 23rd Street, near 31st Avenue, in Astoria shortly before 2 a.m., police sources told the Daily News.

He later died at the hospital, the sources said.

One neighbor told the paper that the officer is “a really nice guy.”

"He walks his two dogs in the morning, sometimes with his wife or girlfriend," the neighbor said. "I see them walking the dogs all the time."

Ten NYPD officers died by suicide last year. In response, former NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill launched a number of mental health initiatives.
