NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A car fatally struck a pedestrian as he tried to cross an expressway in the Bronx Monday night, the NYPD said.

The male pedestrian was crossing the Major Deegan Expressway, near West Fordham Road in University Heights, from west to east around 8:20 p.m. on Monday when a 28-year-old man driving a Volkswagen Golf SE south on the expressway hit him, police said Tuesday.

The pedestrian flew up onto the hood of the vehicle and struck the windshield before falling to the pavement, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 28-year-old driver, who wasn’t injured, stayed at the scene and wasn’t arrested or charged, the NYPD said.

Police didn’t immediately release the pedestrian’s name or age. An investigation is ongoing.
