It all started with a traffic stop around 3 p.m. After the stop, officers suspected there were narcotics in the car.
With the front doors of the stopped vehicle still open, the driver tried to pull off from the scene, with his passenger inside. That led to a struggle between a sergeant and the driver, ending with the sergeant opening fire.
The driver was shot and pronounced dead at the hospital.
The passenger is in police custody.
The sergeant involved was treated at the scene for minor scrapes related to the struggle.
