1 stabbed as Santas help subdue knife-wielding drunk on LIRR train: police, witnesses [VIDEO]

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Santas returning from Manhattan’s SantaCon helped subdue a drunken LIRR rider who was spewing anti-gay slurs and swinging a knife before stabbing another rider in the leg, police and witnesses say.

Cell phone video shows the intense, mid-ride scuffle between the drunken man and other riders, some dressed up in Santa outfits.

“An altercation happened, someone pulled a knife and a bunch of people jumped on him and they managed to hold the guy down and beat him up pretty bad until the cops arrived,” rider Matthew Mont told 1010 WINS.

Mont said the 45-year-old man was still resisting arrest when police got to the scene. He was ultimately taken into custody, according to MTA police. Photos from the New York Post reportedly show his face bloodied after the incident.

The fight broke out around 6 p.m. Saturday near the Woodside LIRR station after the drunken man started making homophobic comments and swinging a knife, witnesses say.

That’s when riders, including some SantaCon participants, tried to subdue him. A 22-year-old man who was among them was stabbed in the leg.

Mont says it was a chaotic scene, with people running around in a panic.

The man who was stabbed was taken to Elmhurst Hospital to be treated for a puncture wound.

Although SantaCon participants often get a bad rap, the woman who posted the video said they weren’t to blame.

“Just so everyone’s clear, the guys in the Santa costumes did not start this,” she wrote. “The old drunk man enticing them did.”

The LIRR banned alcohol from noon Saturday to noon Sunday because of SantaCon.
