Suspected shooter arrested after police chase from LI to Queens

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Suffolk County Police arrested a shooting suspect they said fled the scene, leading police on a pursuit into Queens Sunday night.

Officials say at approximately 9:25 p.m., Jiuber Mejia-Chicas used a handgun to shoot the 28-year-old mother of his child at her in Holtsville residence on Morris Avenue.

Mejia-Chicas, 35, then shot himself before fleeing the scene in a 2005 Ford Escape.

The victim was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Highway Patrol Sergeant Justin Carey observed Mejia-Chicas a short time later in the Ford, traveling westbound on the Long Island Expressway and initiated a traffic stop.

Mejia-Chicas failed to stop and continued westbound into Nassau County, then into Queens to the Whitestone Expressway where the vehicle stopped at approximately 10:15 p.m.

Authorities arrested Mejia-Chicas and transported him to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.Investigators recovered a weapon at the shooting scene, The New York Post reports.Detectives charged Mejia-Chicas with Assault 2nd and 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd and 4th Degree and Criminal Use of a Firearm 2ndDegree.
