NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The fires burning the Australian state of New South Wales were declared contained last week, for the first time following months of devastation.

The New South Wales Fire Service decided to thank their firefighters by taking out a huge 70-foot billboard ad in Times Square.

"We wanted to say a big "thank you" to all the firefighters who have worked so hard over the last few months, and to the community for its support. And when we say big, we mean big - 70 feet tall in Times Square, New York, the fire service wrote on twitter."

Ad agency Silvercast Media donated the ad space, the fire service said.

Over 2,000 firefighters helped battle the blaze including 200 sent from the U.S.

Millions of acres were burned in the flames with at least 28 people killed, 3,00 homes lost and up to one billion animals affected.
