A freak golf cart accident resulted in injuries to five people on Friday at the 119th U.S. Open. The unattended cart stuck spectators near the 16th hole after a box fell onto the gas pedal and caused the vehicle to accelerate.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a vendor walked away from the cart. After the cart began moving, the vendor was eventually able to bring the vehicle under control. By the time the vendor responded, four spectators had been struck. The Highway Patrol said victims ranged in age from 25 to 82.

The Monterey Herald reported that two victims were taken to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. The victims' names were not released. The USGA released a statement acknowledging that three spectators and a vendor needed medical care.
