If you thought Pepsi’s Apple Pie flavored soda was unique, just wait until you hear about its newest winter-inspired drink!
On Thursday, the brand announced a chocolate version of its drink called the “Cocoa” Cola – not to be mistaken for competitor Coca-Cola.
The Pepsi flavor draws inspiration from hot cocoa, a staple drink during the winter months.
The limited-edition beverage is described as “a delicious blend of cocoa (and hint of marshmallow!) mixed with Pepsi cola.”
The result? A “refreshing new take on the hot chocolate-y classic,” per the press release.
“There is nothing more classic than hot cocoa on a winter day, but this year has been anything but typical” said Todd Kaplan, Vice President of Marketing at Pepsi. “So why not bring together the delicious taste of a Pepsi with the delicious, wintery taste of chocolate and marshmallow and bring some unexpected joy to our fans this season? We are confident we nailed Pepsi “Cocoa” Cola and can’t wait to get this in the hands of cola fans this winter.”
The new flavor comes with a catch, however.
The official Pepsi Twitter account revealed that the flavor was a concept from the Pepsi Test Kitchen and would only be made if the post got 2,021 retweets.
Thankfully (for those who want to try the chocolate cola), the tweet exceeded the goal with over 2,800 retweets in just a few hours.
Pepsi was thrilled, writing: “Well, it looks like you’re all pretty thirsty for some Pepsi “Cocoa” Cola. Stay tuned for details coming in 2021!”
Pepsi has been experimenting with some wild flavors lately.
The previously mentioned Apple Pie Pepsi featured “warm notes of cinnamon, the taste of a buttery crust, and the crispness of a fresh apple.”
And back in the summer, the brand launched Pineapple Pepsi described as the iconic taste of Pepsi with a “splash of pineapple juice.”
