SYML Explains the Meaning Behind His Name, Songwriting Influences

Plus: three stripped-down performances of songs from his new album

Brian Fennell has ventured out on his own after several years with the Seattle band Barcelona. He just released his first solo album under the name SYML. It’s Welsh for “simple,” as he told RADIO.COM.

“It’s a reminder to keep everything, especially music, as simple as possible - but also in our lives, in a relationship,” he said.

Fennell’s eponymous new album features a collection of atmospheric songs that feature bursts of piano, acoustic guitar and falsetto. Fennell sings about the loves of his life – his wife and daughter – and says his songwriting is also influenced by his surroundings in the Pacific Northwest.

“You’re sort of forced to feel small in this area because it’s epic mountains and the sea and the weather’s fairly unforgiving and rainy, “Fennell explained. “It kind of faces you with yourself and, for me anyway, it channels this honest approach to music.”

Fennell stripped down three songs from the new album for a special RADIO.COM performance. Listen to “Where’s My Love,” “Clean Eyes,” and “Girl.”
