These are the scariest movies most likely to raise your heart rate

These horror movies will make your heart skip a beat... literally.

A new study by the Science of Scare Project has determined a list of the scariest movies by measuring people's heart beats while viewing the flicks.

According to CNET, the small study monitored the heart rates of 50 people of various ages as they watched over 120 hours of horror movies in 5.1 surround sound.

The participants watched 50 horror movies, a mix of modern and classic films in the genre, which were chosen based on their ratings on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes.

According to the study, the participants' average heart rate was 65 beats per minute (bpm) and rose the highest when viewing the 2012 film "Sinister. " While watching Ethan Hawke battle with the evil forces in his house their rates rose 32% to 86 bpm.

Here are the 20 scariest movies based on the average heart rates they generated:

1. "Sinister" 86 beats per minute.

2. "Insidious" 85 bpm

3.  "The Conjuring" 84 bpm

4.  "Hereditary"  83 bpm

5.  "Paranormal Activity"  82 bpm

6.  "It Follows"  81 bpm

7.  (tie) "The Conjuring 2" and "The Babadook"  80 bpm

9.  (tie) "The Descent," "The Visit," and "The Ring"  79 bpm

12.  (tie) "A Quiet Place" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street"  78 bpm

14.  (tie) "Halloween," "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "28 Days Later," and "The Exorcist"  77 bpm

18.  "Hush", 76 bpm

19.  "It", 75 bpm

20.  "Scream", 73 bpm

While everything in the top 10 came out within the last 20 years, classic films like like "Halloween," "Chainsaw," and "The Exorcist" appear further down on the list.

Some other classic movies that appear on the list include "The Omen," "The Shining," "Alien," "The Thing," and "Friday the 13th."
