Jennifer Aniston faces backlash for Christmas ornament commemorating the pandemic

Jennifer Aniston is facing backlash for undermining the severity of the coronavirus pandemic with a festive Christmas ornament engraved with the message “Our first pandemic 2020.”

The “Friends” star shared the photo of the wood carved ornament with her 36 million Instagram followers and immediately sparked mixed reactions from her fans.

Some fans pointed out that the ornament trivializes the tremendous amount of loss and pain as well as unprecedented challenges the pandemic caused all over the world.

One user said sarcastically, “Cheers to our first pandemic of 2020, where millions of people died! Lets celebrate that on a Christmas ornament!”

Other Twitter fans jumped the Aniston’s defense, saying that the actress was simply using the ornament to reflect on a memorable year in her life.

User @awomanwomnderful replied to Pop Crave's tweet saying, “Mask ornaments ornaments that say coronavirus 2020 celebrate surviving it! It’s not over yet! What’s the harm in a ornament? I’m gonna get one! I been on lockdown since March! None of us has ever been though this it’s been life changing. Survival is the reason this season #2020”

Another user said, “It is a reminder that this happened in 2020. Just like the ornament I received today with toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and masks. Ornament marks a very important time in our lives."

The ornament that Aniston showed is a custom-made design sold by an Etsy Shop called Rustic Raleigh for $5, shop owner Brittany Sutton told Insider on Sunday in an email.

Aniston has not given any response to the backlash.

In the past, the actress has been vocal about encouraging people to wear a mask to protect against the spread of COVID-19.

In June, Aniston said, “If you care about human life, please... just #wearadamnmask 😷 and encourage those around you to do the same ❤️”.
