A man from Kentucky, who asked to remain anonymous, won the $2 million Powerball ticket from this weekend’s drawing.
After the drawing, Kentucky Lottery officials said the winner received a text from someone telling him to check his Powerball ticket, WLKY reported.
“So that’s what I did. I looked at it and sure enough, it was a winner. The rest is history,” the winner said. “I thought I was having a heart attack.”
The winning ticket matched the first five numbers, but not the Powerball win, the game’s second prize. Usually, the prize pays $1,000,000, but the winner chose to spend another $1 for the Power Play feature, winning $2,000,000.
The Kentucky native shared that he played the same set of numbers for the last several years. He said the winning numbers came from a movie where the main character wins the lottery with the same number but did not say the specific film.
After taxes, the man received a check for $1,420,000.
“It’s pure luck,” he said.
The man had retired but went back to work several years ago. Now, after winning the lottery, he said that he could retire for good. After being the lucky winner, he is looking forward to spending more time with his family.
He purchased the winning ticket at a gas station, and the store will receive a bonus of $20,000 for selling the ticket.
