Tonight is the big night as the stars of Country music gather in Nashville for the 54th annual Country Music Association awards ceremony. One of the nights most-nominated artists, Maren Morris, joined RADIO.COM's Katie Neal backstage for a quick chat about what we can expect, and what Maren is most excited for.
The 2020 CMAs are one of the first events that will host a limited but live audience and as a new mom as well, it's not something that Maren will be taking for granted. She says she's looking forward to wearing a gorgeous Dolce & Gabbana piece for the red carpet, and is thankful to their team who flew out to Nashville to give her the full "Dolce experience."
"I feel like I've been postpartum and so ready to feel like myself again," Maren tells Katie. "I feel like when I put this dress on, I was me again. So, I'm excited to be on the red carpet with it."
Maren is nominated for awards in the categories of Female Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year and Single of the Year for her track "The Bones," and Musical Event of the Year, twice, both for "The Bones" and "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," along with Miranda Lambert, Ashley McBryde, Tenille Townes, Caylee Hammack, and Elle King.
Released in the summer of 2019, Maren's "The Bones" has kept it's stamina for over a year at the top of charts and playlists, a feat she chalks up to the "many lives" the song has been through in that time.
"It started as this song about my relationship with Ryan [Hurd] and then sort of transformed into a song that became like the anthem of the early 2020 crap year," she admits. "I love that it sort of transcended 'love song' and became a song about our country and our world right now instead of staying still."
"That's always an unplanned, magical thing when your song becomes something else than what you initially intended it to be," she continued. "I love that it's become this positive anthem to get us through this pandemic, and for it to be nominated at the CMA Awards by my peers... it's a huge honor, always."
As for her second nomination in the Musical Event category for "Fooled Around and Fell In Love," Maren is just thrilled to be nominated alongside such an incredible group of women.
Remembering back to when Miranda first proposed the song to her, Maren says she "can't even remember thinking" about it. "I just remember saying yes, in a heartbeat because she's always been so supportive of me. She and I are both from Texas, we've known each other a long time... I feel like she's the best in our genre and to be a part of this song it feels -- not as lonely."
"Sometimes you get nominated for stuff and it's just you up there if you do win. I love the prospect of us winning and it's not just a single person celebrating. It's a group of women who respect each other that won... this feels like our own little girl-group."
Looking ahead as we near the end of 2020, Maren's admits home life with her now eight-month-old baby Hayes has been flying by, just as it has for the rest of us. "He's just perfect, he's so smiley" she says. "It's a really fun age with him right now because he's laughing at everything... he loves music. He's just the sweetest baby and I just get excited everyday that I get to wake up and hang out with him."
Maren is also set to perform tonight at the 54th annual CMA Awards which will be broadcasting live from Music City Center in Nashville, TN. So be sure to tune in -- and check back with RADIO.COM for even more exclusive interviews with your favorite stars.
