September brings the end of summer, the start of school, and also National Suicide Prevention Month. And in its honor RADIO.COM's I’m Listening broadcast is returning on Wednesday, September 23. Artist, athletes and individuals nationwide will join forces for a special two hour event, to showcase that talk has the power to save lives.

By sharing stories, and having healthy conversations around the topic of mental health it helps achieve our goal. For the subject and those who struggle with mental health issues to receive nothing but acceptance and understanding. You are not alone, and the I’m Listening initiative was created to assure you that it’s okay not to be okay.

Leading up to this years broadcast, we wanted to take a moment and remind you that many of your favorite artists are just like us, and struggle with the same issues we all face. And that in spite of it all, they do their best to learn to love themselves and make sure you love yourself too. So we’ve put together a list of our favorite artist that make sure to spread that message loud and clear.

1 Beyoncé

Can you even have a conversation about empowerment without bringing up Beyoncé, we think not. From “***Flawless” to “Pretty Hurts,” Queen Bey lets her lyrics do the talking, acting as a source of body-positivity and self-esteem-boosting metaphorical medicine. She even opened up about her journey of body acceptance after giving birth to her twins in her Netflix documentary Homecoming. Additionally, she opened up to Vogue about that experience as well, saying, “I gave myself self-love and self-care, and I embraced being curvier. I accepted what my body wanted to be.” Further stressing, “I think it’s important for women and men to see and appreciate the beauty in their natural bodies.” Bey learning to love herself as she is, has enabled and inspired so many others to do the same, to love her and also to love themselves.

2 Demi Lovato

Demi has been through a long journey to get to where she is today. Getting through those ups and downs, she has persevered through come out on the other side. Demi recently spoke about struggles with mental health and what she’s done to cope. With that said, part of her journey has also been about learning to love not just her inner-self but her outer-self too. Demi hasn’t always loved the skin she is in, and it's taken her time to arrive at a point where she loves her body, and now that she’s there, she want’s to make sure, that if you aren’t, that you get there too. With a post on Instagram Demi showed off her self-love, along with her amazing bikini bod, writing, “here’s me, RAW, REAL! And I love me. And you should love you too!” She finished off the post with “now back to the studio” promising us that a self-love anthem was coming soon and six months later she delivered, with “I Love Me.”

3 Lizzo

Since her epic arrival on the music scene, Lizzo has never been afraid to clap back at the haters for any type of shaming or shade thrown her way. Besides blessing us with body positive bops like “Good as Hell,” “Scuse Me” and“My Skin,” Lizzo uses her platform to promote self-love and to make sure body shaming trolls get put in their place. This past June, Lizzo blasted said haters, by responding to some nonsense with a TikTok workout video, “BECAUSE I LOVE YALL AND I DONT WANT YALL TO GO THROUGH THE SELF HATRED I WENT THROUGH.” Awww she loves us, and she was us to love us too!

Also, love yourself today and everyday. I don't care what anyone says. You're funny and you have a cute butt. Embrace life. YEAH!

4 Halsey

Speaking of being outspoken about self-love, Halsey has always made sure her fans and anyone willing to listen for that matter, know that your own opinion of yourself is the only one that matters. Besides making a name for herself in music, Halsey has also become one of most inspirational and outspoken artists on today’s charts. Never afraid to speak up for what she believes in, most of her advocating takes place on social media, with Twitter being her main platform of choice. Looking back there was tons to choose from, but we felt particularly heard when we read her tweet way back in 2014, when she told us we "have a cute butt," and to “love yourself today and everyday.”

5 Harry Styles

Another artist that lets his lyrics do most of the talking is Harry Styles. Harry doesn’t hide his views and opinions, however, he’s much more comfortable expressing them artistically, not feeling the need to explain himself. As long as his fans receive the message (which we do) then he’s good. Harry doesn’t concern himself with labels, and whether it’s by what he chooses to wear or what he chooses to sing, he is an advocate for individuality and self-love, which is unmistakably exemplified throughout his latest album Fine Lines. With his motto being, “treat people with kindness,” his message aims to resonate in regards to not just how you treat others, but also how you treat yourself.

6 Miley Cyrus

Similar to Harry, Miley Cyrus isn’t tied down by the notion of definitive labels, and all about individuality and letting that freak flag fly. Even as Hannah Montana, she always stressed how important it is to never be ashamed of who you are, and that the first step starts with self-love and acceptance. “Nobody’s perfect,” remember? Miley has learned to embrace who she is at every step of her life and constantly encourages her fans to do the same, because “it’s all about the climb.” Even throughout her evolution as an artist, entering new eras and taking on different personas, one thing that has remained steadfast is her very vocal advocacy as a supporter and member of the LGBTQ community. She unquestionably stands for and promotes love, love for each-other and love for one-self, PERIODT.
