As we have seen in the past month and a half, pride festivals and events around the world have been announcing cancelations left and right. However, GLAAD is making sure pride season does not go uncelebrated amidst the pandemic.
This week the non-profit organization announced it’s “LGBTQ response to COVID-19” with a fantastical and star-studded live stream event called “Together in Pride: You Are Not Alone.” The Facebook and YouTube streaming event is set to take place on April 26th at 5 PM PT/8 PM ET on @GLAAD handles, and will feature prominent LGBTQ icons and allies such as Bebe Rexha, Kesha, Adam Lambert, and Melissa Etheridge.
Appearances will be made by Billy Eichner, Dan Levy, Michelle Visage, Lilly Singh, Matt Bomer, Mj Rodriguez and many more. Kesha and Etheridge are the only two artists set to perform, other artists will appear as guests on the stream.
The virtual pride event will not only demonstrate the LGBTQ community’s response to COVID-19, but will also echo positive messages to those living with HIV. The event will raise money for LGBTQ centers around the United States.
During this time an abundance of messaging about being “safer at home” as been all over news and social media. However, often times some people in the LGBTQ community do not have accepting homes to rely on and frequently turn to LGBTQ centers as a place of refuge. While shelter in place orders remain, GLAAD is offering alternative ways for LGBTQ community members to feel connected and heard while socially isolating.
GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis points out, “at a time when some LGBTQ people could be isolating in homes that are not affirming, GLAAD is bringing together the biggest LGBTQ stars and allies to send messages of love, support and acceptance.”
