DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - You can chalk this one up as one of the stranger things when it comes to NBA salary cap logistics.

The Mavericks made a trade with the 76ers on Wednesday night. The deal saw Dallas send sharpshooter Seth Curry to Philadelphia in exchange for shooting guard Josh Richardson. And that's where things got interesting...

According to Keith Smith of Yahoo Sports, the Mavs had to renounce the free agent rights to future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki in order for the trade to be completed.

You might be very confused right now, so here's exactly what happened: The Mavs needed cap space in order to process the trade. In order to do that, they gave up their rights to exceed the salary cap in order to re-sign Dirk.

The Tall Baller from the G, of course, has no desire to return to the NBA. He's enjoying life with his lovely family and eating all the ice cream he wants.

But the procedural move is just another reminder of how much we miss Dirk being out on the court. Thankfully, we got some guy named Luka who helps us deal with the pain.
