Ben Roethlisberger’s window to win a third Super Bowl is small, and the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback realizes if he doesn’t start playing better, that window may be gone entirely.
Following Sunday’s 26-15 loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Steelers’ second straight loss after starting 11-0, Roethlisberger admitted afterward that he is the one who needs to play better, or he won’t be around much longer.
Here are some of the best quotes from Roethlisberger and the Steelers after their loss to Buffalo:
“I hope so (when asked if improvement in the offense can be regained), if I don’t play good enough football. I need to hang it up. I still feel like I can do enough things to help this team win football games. I am going to do everything I can to get us back on track.”
“Defenses can play pass if you can’t run the ball. We need to do better at being better at being a balanced offense. We need to do better at executing the plays that are called.”
“We’ve lost two. We are facing some adversity, but we’re not hitting the panic button. Offensively we are not very good. Right now we are not playing good football and that starts with me. We all need to look in the mirror and like I said that starts with me, and understand that we all need to be better and I think that we will be. I think this is a team that is resilient, and understands what it takes to win football games, and understands what time of year it is. The way we are playing right now is unacceptable.”
Head coach Mike Tomlin
“Just really not enough play-making for us tonight. It’s really as simple as that. Particularly in the second half, in the beginning of the second half, I thought they heated up offensively and we weren’t able to keep pace with them.”
“Obviously we got to possess the ball better. We gotta score more points on offense.”
“There’s no question (on if the pick 6 was the big play in the first half). We made a few plays in the first half, defensively. They made a few plays. Their plays were more significant than ours. That pick six was THE significant play. You have to give them credit.”
“He was making quick decisions and getting the ball out (on Josh Allen in the 2nd half). He’s having a MVP-caliber year man, it’s going to be tough to hold him down for 60 minutes. He figured some things out and was able to find some rhythm. We still had our opportunity to make plays. He and they just made more than we did.”
“We gotta win more possession downs and thus possess the ball more and give us more opportunities. The more snaps you get, the more opportunities you get to make dynamic plays.”
“As a defense, we have to get off the field. When we do get in red zones, we have to surrender three or less and we didn’t do that enough.”
“You look at these past two weeks, our mistakes have caught up to us. We have to own up to it. We need to learn from it. We need to make it disappear right away.”
“We played like crap today, simple as that. You can talk about our defense in the first quarter, after that it all went to hell.”
“Whoever is out there needs to be responsible. It’s about accommodating each other. It’s about having each other’s backs. Who’s to say the offense needs to be perfect week in and week out. Who’s to say the defense or the special teams, we need to play together as a team. We need to work together and these past two games we haven’t done that. There is a disconnect there.”
