Samuels will take over in the fall semester, later this year.

Samuels is currently the director of visual and performing arts at Randolph School in Huntsville, Alabama. Prior to Randolph School, she served 14 years as director of bands at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she led the Marching Blazers, the Wind Symphony, the Symphony Band, and the Blazer Band, as well as taught courses in conducting and music education.  She also taught for 12 years at a high school in Marietta Georgia and was assistant director of bands at the University of Georgia for a year. She spent two years as director of bands at a high school in Fairfax, Virginia.

Samuels attended Furman and earned a bachelor’s in music education from the school.  At Georgia State University in Atlanta, she received her master’s in instrumental conducting and got a Ph. D in music education from Auburn University.

Current Director of Bands, Leslie W. Hicken, joined the Furman music faculty 26 years ago and will retire this spring. He will conduct his last concert with the ensemble Friday, April 12, at 8pm at Furman's McAlister Auditorium, but will still lead the well-known Music by the Lake concert series this summer and continue as artistic director and conductor of the Carolina Youth Symphony.
