With just 14 days to go until the September 30 deadline to respond to the 2020 census, the City of Greenville is sending an urgent plea to residents, “There is power in numbers. Be counted.”

The self response rate for the City is 57 percent.

With a population of just under 70,000 in the city limits, that means approximately 30,000 people are uncounted.

Census takers continue door-to-door efforts but the potential loss to our community over ten years is astonishing:

Federal funding for:

  • Affordable housing
  • Early childhood education
  • School meals
  • Highway planning and construction
  • Special education programs
  • Medical assistance and health insurance
  • Foster care

To increase numbers over the next two weeks the City has purchased space on fifteen digital billboard. The ads will count down the days to go and provide the appropriate phone numbers and email addresses.

Additionally the city is launching a digital media campaign and partnering with churches and non-profit groups.

Recreation staff will be trained and equipped with technology and dispatched to ride Greenlink buses and assist passengers who have not competed the census. W

Self-reporting for the census is available at my2020census.gov and 844-330-2020 (English) or 844-468-2020 (Spanish)
