We appreciate the governor emphasizing the importance of providing additional resources to protect students and employees in public schools. As the state’s largest school district, we share the governor’s desire to get students back in school five days per week as soon as possible. The governor announced he will expedite this process by asking the General Assembly to allocate $50 million dollars for the purchase of additional safety equipment. It is our desire to understand how these funds will help schools maintain a social distance of six feet between students and between students and employees, which is currently not possible with all students present. Six feet of distance is a key tenet in safeguarding individuals in accord with direction from the state’s public health authorities, including SCDHEC. The inability to maintain this recommended distance is the single greatest barrier to our full return of all students to school at one time.
