Kansas City-- Dayton Moore used the 4th overall pick in this year's draft to select the best college pitching prospect available, by drafting Asa Lacy out of Texas A&M. Moore leaned on the old baseball adage, "you can never have too many arms" by selecting the best high school pitching prospect in the draft, Ben Hernandez, with his second-round pick.

Hernandez, a 6-foot-2 right-hander out of Chicago, is a polished pitching prospect who may possess the best changeup in the entire draft. While his changeup may be his best pitch, it's not the only plus pitch in his repertoire. Hernandez has a 94-95mph fastball, which he throws with control and has been very good at using it to set up his changeup, which sits in the 85-87 mph range. His third pitch, a curveball that he throws 78-80 mph is still considered a plus pitch, although he has a tendency to slow his arm speed which he will need to work on, to keep major league hitters from identifying it early on. It should also be of note that Hernandez has been working on a fourth pitch, a cutter that he has picked up by studying Los Angeles Dodgers‘ Walker Buehler’s grip and delivery.

Hernandez was selected to pitch in the Prospect Development Pipeline League where he was excelled, pitching six hitless innings, striking out seven hitters, and only issuing one walk. He also dazzled scouts by striking out the side in 2019's Under Armour All-American Game.

If Hernandez continues to develop at this pace, he will be a very exciting young pitcher to watch rise through the Royals' system.
