(670 The Score) Bears coach Matt Nagy now has another key position to fill on his defensive staff.

Defensive line coach Jay Rodgers is leaving the organization to join the Chargers’ staff, according to multiple reports Wednesday evening. Brad Biggs of the Tribune first reported the news. In Los Angeles, Rodgers will work with a familiar face in new Chargers coach Brandon Staley, who was the Bears’ outside linebackers coach in 2017 and 2018.

Rodgers was well-respected in Chicago and played an instrumental role in developing the Bears’ defensive line into one of the best in the NFL. Akiem Hicks blossomed into a Pro Bowler under Rodgers’ watch, while Eddie Goldman and Bilal Nichols also transformed into difference-makers.

Rodgers had been an in-house candidate to become the Bears’ new defensive coordinator following Chuck Pagano’s retirement last week. He had been coaching Chicago’s defensive line since 2015, first working under coach John Fox and then staying when Nagy took over in 2018.
