TE David Njoku among 5 players return to practice Thursday for Browns

BEREA, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Browns finally had a positive day on the injury front with the return of five players to practice Thursday, including tight end David Njoku.

Njoku had been sidelined with a wrist injury. He was limited to position and individual work along with receiver Damion Ratley, who had been dealing with a groin injury.

Defensive end Chad Thomas left Tuesday’s practice early with a neck injury but was back on the field Thursday and participated in team 11-on-11 work.

Cornerback Terrance Mitchell (knee) and linebacker Tae Davis (illness) also returned and participated in team drills during Thursday’s shortened practice.

Big play defense – Thursday marked another strong day for the defense as the first team offense with baker Mayfield continues to try and find its footing during the install phase of camp.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield saw a pass deflected near the line by defensive tackle Eli Ankou into the arms of linebacker Sione Takitaki for an interception.

Cornerback Robert Jackson broke up a quick slant from backup quarterback Case Keenum to J’Mon Moore.

Defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi stopped running back Nick Chubb for a los on a run and defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson also stopped Dontrell Hilliard in the backfield. Hilliard broke off a big run earlier in the day.

Hollywood lights – One of Mayfield’s best plays during 11-on-11 of the day went for a 20-yard touchdown to receiver Rashard “Hollywood” Higgins.

Still kickin’ – Austin Seibert made seven of his eight field goal attempts during a special teams period with the longest make coming from approximately 49 yards.

Roster move – The Browns signed center Jon Toth and placed defensive end Curtis Weaver on injured reserve.

Toth is 6-5, 298 pounds and officially in his first NFL season out of Kentucky. He has spent time on the Eagles (2017-18) and Jets (2018) practice squads in addition to playing for the XFL’s D.C. Defenders. He is a native of Indianapolis, Ind.

Puppy pound counter – 68 puppies have been adopted through 11 days of camp and since 2015 563 adoptions have taken place through the northeast Ohio SPCA.

Injury report – LB Adrian Clayborn (groin), CB Kevin Johnson (liver), CB M.J.
Stewart Jr. (hamstring), C JC Tretter (knee), CB Greedy Williams (shoulder) and LB Mack Wilson (knee) did not practice Thursday.
