We all need a shoulder to cry on sometimes. The 2-4 Cowboys are in first place in the NFC East (the NFL equivalent of a rec-league participation trophy), but you wouldn’t know it by this fan’s reaction.

This image was captured late in Monday night’s 38-10 Cardinals rout on the Cowboys’ home turf at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. As you can imagine, this inconsolable Dallas supporter—who seems like he could really use a pep talk right now—instantly became a meme, drawing hundreds of responses on social media.

We’ve all lived this pain. Well, maybe not specifically the despair of seeing Andy Dalton burst into flames on MNF, but heartache is certainly a chief component of the fan experience, especially in Dallas, where the long-suffering Cowboys are going on 25 years without a Super Bowl appearance. Monday’s viral moment at Jerry’s World was reminiscent of 2015’s March Madness when a crestfallen piccolo player wept during Villanova’s NCAA tournament loss to NC State.

Between Dak Prescott’s devastating ankle injury the week prior and Monday’s meltdown against the Kyler Murray-led Cardinals, it’s easy to see why Dallas diehards are in a glass case of emotion. Even the support of his girlfriend, who appears to kiss his cheek, can’t shake this distraught Cowboys fan from his palpable anguish.

If I bled Cowboys blue and silver like this tortured soul, I’d probably cover my eyes too. As noted by Jordan Cohn in his article earlier today, no team in league history has allowed more points than Dallas (218) through its first six games. Luckily the Cowboys have a cupcake matchup on tap this week against an anemic Washington offense that ranks dead-last in yards per game (275.3).

Tom Hanks said there’s no crying in baseball, but he didn’t specify about football. After seeing Ocean Spray roll out the red carpet for juice-chugging TikTok star Nathan Apodaca, maybe this Cowboys fan can land a lucrative endorsement deal with Kleenex.
