The Atlanta Braves signed veteran starting pitcher Drew Smyly today to help shore up a rotation that was a mess last season. The guys on Dukes & Bell talked about the deal and how they were underwhelmed by the signing.
“The left-handed pitcher is 31 and a career .500 pitcher," Bell said. "He played for the Giants last year. We got a guy, we picked up a body, big-game Drew Smyly... $11 million for one year, because we love one-year deals around here. This is why I get mad at the Braves. This is another guy because he’s cheap and they only do one-year deals.”
Smyly only made five starts in 2020 and posted an 0-1 record with a 3.42 ERA. In 2019 he was 4-7 with two teams with a 6.24 ERA.
“I haven’t dived in enough to know what Drew Smyly can and can’t bring to this team, but management is content with allowing these young guys to develop and they should,” Dukes said. “If you really want to be in the mix and get back to the NLCS I don’t know if Drew Smyly can help us do that. But this ain’t the guy right? There’s another deal that’s coming along somewhere.”
