PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Pittsburgh will not be a hub city when the NHL playoffs begin.

The Penguins announced on Tuesday they were told  Monday night by the NHL that the city will not be a home to half of the NHL teams in the playoffs.

The Penguins submitted a proposal to the NHL with support from UPMC and PPG along with local business, political and union leaders.

Pittsburgh was one of 10 cities being considered as a hub city. Two will be picked.

"We know Pittsburgh would have been a great host city because of our fans and the support we received from the local business community, unions and our political leaders. We thank Commissioner Bettman and the NHL for considering us as one of the finalists, which is a reflection on how great of a city Pittsburgh truly is," said Penguins President and CEO David Morehouse. "We now look forward to training camp and getting back to game action."

Las Vegas will most likely be one of the cities.

Another front runner, Columbus was also scratched off the list on Monday night

The Penguins changes seemed to decrease after it was announced last week the Canadian government said it would allow the NHL to quarantine internally.

That move made Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton realistic possibilities for a hub city.

With western city Las Vegas considered one of the hubs, Toronto could be a front runner since it is on the Eastern part of the continent.

The league is currently in phase 2 of its return to hockey, with teams permitted to practice at facilities with six on the ice at a time.

Phase 3 will see a two-week training camp take place before teams travel to their hub city on July 23 or 24.
