PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan)- After the Seattle Seahawks blew a 13-point lead and lost to the Arizona Cardinals in an overtime thriller Sunday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers are now the lone undefeated team in the NFL at 6-0.
But does that mean that they are the best team in football? Are they Super Bowl favorites out the AFC? Colin Dunlap and Chris Mack of The Fan Morning Show discussed and debated this Monday morning.
“What I do know is this,” said Dunlap. “There’s no style points in the NFL. They’re 6-0, no one else is. I think until someone knocks them off, and it could happen this weekend, I’d be disappointed if all things hold and there’s not a debilitating injury to a key player, if they don’t get to the AFC title game.”
Chris Mack followed that with an argument as to why the Steelers ARE the NFL’s top team as their record states they are.
“You can look up and down that list of one loss teams and they’ve all had a moment like the Steelers had in the second half yesterday. Kansas City is 6-1, they blew an 11-point lead at home to the Raiders. Baltimore is 5-1, they lost by two touchdowns to the Chiefs in Baltimore. Tennessee is 5-1, but they’ve lost to the Steelers.
Seattle 5-1, but they had that collapse last night in Arizona. Green Bay 5-1, but they got absolutely steamrolled by ‘Tompa Bay.’ Chicago 5-1, but Nick Foles is their quarterback and they’ve got the 5th least productive offense, as far as points go, in the National Football League.
So, just looking at the one loss teams, you can make the same argument for them not being the best team in the league that everybody is going to try to make against the Steelers which is, ‘Well, that 2nd half against Tennessee.’ Yeah, well how about that first half? This defense is really good, they are surviving the loss of one of the most dynamic guys on the inside of the defense and their offense is beating teams a different way seemingly every single week.
They’ve continued to get better despite increasingly difficult opposition. That’s why in my opinion, they’re the best team in the league right now because they are 6-0. Any argument you try to make for another team that’s got one loss that may be better than them, I can quickly turn around against that one loss team.”
Colin says the uncertainty surrounding Minkah Fitzpatrick’s play to this point factors into the discussion as well. Is he just having an off year or is something bigger at play? Will they miss his big play ability at some point that he provided all of last season?
