Thursday marked the 19-year anniversary of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The somber occasion was noted with tributes and remembrances across the sports landscape -- from leagues, their teams, and countless athletes.

The shocking attacks senselessly took the lives of more than 3,000 Americans and brought the world to a virtual standstill in the late summer and early fall of 2001, sports being no exception.

Here's how the sports world honored the fallen and vowed to #neverforget nearly two decades after the tragedy:

Many of New York's pro sports teams posted tributes.

The Washington Wizards noted the somber anniversary of the attack on the Pentagon.

Football greats Ben Roethlisberger and Deion Sanders were among the many athletes to weigh in, as did former Patriots star Joe Andruzzi, who has three brothers in the FDNY.

Pro teams from all around the country renewed their commitment to never forget.

Some of college sports' most iconic programs also spoke out.
