Here was the deal T.O. signed: The Eagles gave him a contract for $24 million over three years, but here’s the most important fact...Joe Banner paid him more, much more, than any receiver in his first year. The top WR’s were making $8 million. Terrell Owens was paid $12 million in his first year, much more than any receiver.
He was signed for $12 million, $4 million and $8 million. The total for three years was the average of the top WR’s in the NFL. T.O. ignored the fact that he got $4 million in his first year.
I know for a fact that the way the contract was set up was explained to Owens. He saw the $4 million in year two and conveniently forgot about the first year. The reality is, nobody in the NFL was willing to give Owens the deal the Eagles signed him to.
These are the facts and the Eagles and Joe Banner did the right thing. It would have never been right for Owens, regardless of what would have been done.
As terrific as T.O. was, I just wanted to set the facts straight.
