The 49ers’ efforts to lock in DeForest Buckner, burgeoning star of the defensive line, are still very much in the early stages.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com and NFL Network has the latest on the negotiations.

The #49ers and star DL DeForest Buckner have had contract negotations for a long-term deal but are far apart, source said. Agent Chafie Fields talked with SF brass in the last few days, but there is no deal in sight. They picked up his option last week and is a priority for them.

Buckner, who was the No. 7 overall pick in 2016, is free of his first Pro Bowl appearance. He’ll make a base salary of $720,000 in 2019 and will earn $14.3 million next year while playing under his fifth-year option, which the 49ers picked up just a couple of weeks ago.
