After leaving the door open for a return all week, the 49ers have ruled George Kittle out for Sunday's matchup against the Jets. Head coach Kyle Shanahan made the announcement on Friday afternoon before the team headed off to the airport in advance of their cross-country flight.
As of Tuesday, the 49ers had been "cautiously optimistic" that George Kittle, who is dealing with a knee sprain, would play in Week 2 against the Jets, per a report from Mike Garafolo and Michael Silver of NFL Network.
Shanahan told reporters on Wednesday that Kittle wouldn't be practicing but that didn't preclude him from playing against the Jets.
Shanahan had first announced the injury during his press conference on Monday afternoon.
The star tight end, who was hurt in the first half of Sunday's 24-20 loss to the Cardinals, is be re-evaluated on Wednesday. Shanahan said Kittle was sore on on Monday. Here's the play on which the Niner game breaker was hurt:
