Jeff Garcia has had enough of Cam Newton and his wardrobe.
The former quarterback ripped into the Patriots quarterback for his style choices on gameday because Newton has not been playing well enough to dress however he likes.
“You throw three more interceptions, you get yanked in the second half, there’s nothing good going your way. Why are you dressing like that to bring more attention to yourself?” Garcia asked on NBC Sports San Francisco. “I’d be trying to ask the equipment managers to put me in your jock sock cart and sneak me through the back door and I’ll show up on the field and do the best that I can.”
Newton completed nine of 15 passes for 98 yards and three interceptions before he was benched in favor of Jarrett Stidham in the Patriots’ 33-6 loss to the 49ers.
The one-time MVP, whom the Patriots signed to an incentive-laden deal this summer to replace Tom Brady, has been underwhelming, to say the least.
Newton is 2-3 as the Patriots starter, having thrown for 969 yards and two touchdowns to seven interceptions. He does have 244 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns to add to his passing numbers, but also two fumbles as turnovers have become a major issue with Newton.
In fact, Newton has not even made a Pro Bowl since his MVP season in 2015 – which is part of the problem in Garcia’s view, which remained fixated on his fashion choices.
“This just goes back to a couple years just watching this guy and seeing him at the podium,” Garcia said. “And yet, what he’s doing on the field does not translate to being that guy.”
One of Garcia’s co-hosts pointed to the fact that Joe Namath was flamboyant despite being a rather mediocre quarterback.
“When you predict you’re gonna win a Super Bowl and you go out and do it, wear whatever the hell you want,” Garcia said.
The Patriots are far from Super Bowl contenders. At 2-4 they trail both the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins in the AFC East standings through seven weeks of the season.
