Nick Mullens will start for the 49ers in Week 3. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the news, which had been foreshadowed for much of the week, in a Friday morning interview.
Shanahan had previously revealed that he wasn't counting on having Jimmy G for the upcoming matchup with the Giants during a Wednesday morning Zoom call.
Mullens, the interim starter, also filled in for Garoppolo in the second half of the Week 2 win, 31-13, over the Jets.
Shanahan had delivered promising news on that front on Monday afternoon from the club's camp at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, detailing that Garoppolo could play in Week 3.
The QB, who missed the second half of the 31-13 romp of the Jets, is dealing with a high-ankle sprain, but the injury is not severe, according to Shanahan, and Garoppolo is officially week-to-week.
ESPN's Adam Schefter has the scoop on the lousy situation in the backfield:
Mostert is currently out with a MCL sprain.
