Where does the time go? Earth Day is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020 and MERS Missouri Goodwill Industries just celebrated its 100th anniversary of providing services right here in St. Louis! Goodwill Industries was founded in 1902 in Boston by a young Methodist minister. His chapel provided a place where goods were exchanged, repaired and refurbished.
Established in 1918, Goodwill Industries has been serving the St. Louis community and our earth for over 100 years. In October 1940 MERS (Metropolitan Employment Rehabilitation Services) incorporated as a Jewish Employment & Vocational Service to help those in need by providing desired employment and community services. Great things happened in 2001 when Goodwill Industries and MERS merged to form an even stronger nonprofit in our community serving some 30,000 people annually with employment services in 62 career centers throughout 89 counties in Missouri and southern Illinois.
MERS Goodwill operates 44 stores throughout their territory to help support their mission of changing lives through the power of work. These stores sell gently used clothing and household items making it a haven for the deal hunters, crafters, theater actors & producers, tinkerers, and Trick or Treaters and you!
Some of the many services and programs that MERS Goodwill provides in our community include career counseling, skills training, education and literacy programs, employment services, and many more. These services are provided to those with disabilities or other challenges to employment helping them to lead productive and fulfilling lives.
MERS Goodwill also has a very large footprint in our community with their recycling efforts. Goodwill strives to recycle most items that don’t sell at our stores from textiles, shoes, plastics, metals and electronics keeping thousands of tons out of our local landfills annually.
Make Earth Day every day by donating to Goodwill! Even if you think no one else will want it, please donate it! With the exception of some items, please consider donating everything. Here’s a helpful list https://mersgoodwill.org/items-we-can-cant-accept/
Together we can make our community and our earth a better place!
