ST. LOUIS, Mo (KFTK) -- The St. Louis Cardinals will make a big political statement when they take the field at home on Friday evening.
"Black Lives Matter" will be stenciled on the pitching mound, according to Cardinal's pitcher, Jack Flaherty.
But it wasn't long ago that another symbol that was only drawn into the dirt of the mound was removed.
In 2013, the grounds crew began carving a cross and the number "6" on the backside of the mound "honoring the late Stan Musial."
When General Manager John Mozeliak learned of it through a report that the St. Louis Post Dispatch had published, he asked that the practice be stopped.
Mozeliak had this to say in a 2013 report by the St Louis Post Dispatch:
Now, in 2020, it seems the political neutrality that kept a religious symbol from being carved into the dirt is suddenly swept under the rug as the organization is set to thrust themselves into the political arena.
On Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals will display their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
