It's Friday afternoon, and the NFL Draft is less than two weeks away. Which means it's time for Mike Valenti's 'If I Ruled The World' Mock Draft 2.0.
The first two picks go as expected, with the Bengals taking Joe Burrow and the Redskins taking Chase Young. And then the draft begins in earnest.
Most experts believe the Lions will take Ohio State CB Jeffrey Okudah in this situation. Clemson LB Isaiah Simmons and Auburn DT Derrick Brown are options as well. But Valenti would go a different route: Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa.
"Look, it’s very, very simple," he said. "Nobody believes we’re taking him, no great offers came in from (the teams below). I’m taking the best player available. We suck, and I’m not making a 10-year decision on a one-year window. Tua will sit in 2020 and assume the job in 2021.
"My job is to do what’s right for the franchise. That’s what I’ve done here. We take Tua and we invest in our future."
At No. 5, the Dolphins are forced into taking Simmons. They fill their hole at quarterback by signing Cam Newton to a two-year, $40 million deal. Valenti calls it the "disaster scenario" for Miami.
"The Lions took Tua and the Jags stunned us all," he said. "We didn’t have a chance to beat the Giants' offer. ... But there’s no panic. We have a million draft picks, I got Cam in the fold short-term, we take the best player. We’re not reaching for a QB we don’t like."
