A familiar voice to San Diego Sports fans, Chris Ello begins his first year co-hosting the Gwynn & Chris sports talk radio show on 97.3 The Fan. Along with working alongside Tony Gwynn Jr. from 3-7 p.m. weekdays, Ello also handles pregame and postgame duties for broadcasts of San Diego Padres games.
Ello also is involved in play-by-play work for his alma mater, San Diego State University, serving as the voice of the SDSU women’s basketball team for the past 11 seasons. He also has broadcasted Aztec baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball.
He has been the voice of the Mountain West Network for championship tournaments in baseball, soccer and tennis for the past three years.
Ello began as a sports writer for the Los Angeles Times (San Diego Edition), covering everything from the Padres to the San Diego Chargers, San Diego Sockers and Del Mar horse racing. During a two-year stint as a columnist for the Pasadena Star-News, he doubled as the beat writer for the Los Angeles Lakers and UCLA.
His broadcast career began as the weekend host of the “World of Sports” talk show on the Mighty 690. He also has previously been a morning show host as well as drive-time.
Ello’s San Diego play-by-play career includes an 11-year stint as the voice of the San Diego Gulls professional hockey club. He also has done major league baseball, NFL football, pro basketball, pro soccer, college football and basketball as well has high school sports.
Originally from Beverly Hills, Calif., Ello played two years of baseball at San Diego State, where he was a teammate of the Hall of Famer, Tony Gwynn. He currently lives in San Diego with his wife, Lori.
