Several Giants players and coaches were absent from practice on Friday to allow for contact tracing and testing, the team said, after offensive lineman Will Hernandez reportedly tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday night.

As many as eight Giants players, reportedly including the 25-year-old Hernandez, were absent from Thursday practice in accordance with league protocols.

The team didn't specify which player had tested positive, but several reports indicated that Hernandez was the affected player, while earlier reports from Thursday morning suggested multiple offensive linemen had been impacted by the positive test.

The seven players who were isolating were considered "close contacts" of Hernandez but not thought to be "high risk," according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, who added that all of them could be back at practice as soon as Friday, test results permitting.

Meanwhile the isolation measures had left the Giants with only four active offensive linemen, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Hernandez, a UTEP product who was drafted in the second round in 2018, was expected to be placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Players who were isolating and awaiting test results were participating in team meetings remotely by call, the team said.

Despite the absences, the team was proceeding with its usual practice routine at its training complex in East Rutherford, N.J., according to Mike Garafolo.

The team said it was working with league medical officials on how to proceed. The positive test was the team's first known case during the season, ESPN reported.

The Giants were set to play the Tampa Bay Bucs on Monday Night Football in Week 8.

Later on Thursday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported a Bucs equipment manager was sent home after a positive COVID test, but it is not expected to pose an issue for Monday's game.

The Los Angeles Chargers also reported a positive test on Thursday.
