On Friday, the CEO of Tokyo's Olympic organizing committee said he wasn't sure if the Summer Games, which were originally set to get underway this July, will even happen a year later in 2021 due to a recent surge in coronavirus cases in Japan. “I don’t think anyone would be able to say if it is going to be possible to get it under control by next July or not,” said Tokyo organizing committee CEO Toshiro Muto. ”We’re certainly are not in a position to give you a clear answer.” As the AP notes, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who issued an emergency declaration just days ago, has been criticized for acting too slowly in battling the virus. Some believe he downplayed its impact on the Japanese people in hopes that the 2020 Games would carry on as planned.
