CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning that scam artists are pretending to be online retail giant Amazon in an attempt to steal your identity.
The consumer advocacy organization says people across the country are getting phone calls claiming that something is wrong with an Amazon order or delivery. Then they’ll ask for personal information, says Steve Bernas, president and CEO of the Chicago and Northern Illinois office of the BBB.
“Scammers build a file on you,” Bernas told WBBM Newsradio’s Craig Dellimore. “They’re building a profile on you in order to steal your credit.”
With Amazon Prime Day scheduled for October 13th and 14th, the Better Business Bureau detailed how the scam works.
"You answer the phone, and it is a recorded message claiming to be from Amazon stating there is a problem with your Amazon account. The message ranges from a fraudulent charge on your Prime card to a lost or damaged package to an unfulfilled order for an iPhone 10," read a notice on the BBB website.
"The con artists will either outright ask for credit card and account login details. Or, they will request remote access to your computer under the guise of “helping” to solve the issue."
Bernas says never give financial or identity information to anyone who calls you out of the blue.
Amazon has reiterated its policy regarding suspicious emails, phone calls and text messages on its website.
"Amazon will never send you an unsolicited message that asks you to provide sensitive personal information," the company said, according to Good Morning America. "Amazon will never ask you to make a payment outside of our website and will never ask you for remote access to your device."
Anyone who believes they have been a victim of a scam, should contact Amazon customer service and the Better Business Bureau.
