Earlier this week, a veterans' services director from Massachusetts invited the community to attend the funeral of a World War II veteran with no surviving family.
The Thursday afternoon funeral was attended by 500 strangers — proving, once again, that no veteran dies alone.
"It's beautiful," Army Sgt. Pete Rooney told the Boston Herald. "I wish it happened for every veteran's funeral."
McCue was 97 years old and, according to the state Secretary of Veterans Affairs Francisco Urena, he landed in Normandy on D-Day in 1944.
