The latest number-crunching shows the LA and Orange County area has the highest rate of unemployment in the nation at 16.9 percent. That's double the national figure.
Labor expert Michael Bernick who is a former state employment chief tells KNX that the region suffers because of the high numbers of workers employed in high-contact industries like tourism, restaurants, and stores. And he says the situation looks like it's getting worse:
The latest stats for jobless claims are also out and they show that they fell back a bit in California but still stand at the historically high level of 230-thousand new applications just last week. Bernick tells us this state continues to see jobless claims at a higher rate than most other parts of the country.
