(WWJ) An Oakland County boy is hospitalized with severe burns to nearly half of his body after lighting his shirt on fire.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the 6-year-old boy was at a friend's house, on Yosemite Drive in Orion Township, Thursday night when he got a hold of some matches.

The boy went outside by himself, began playing with the matches and lit his shirt ablaze, investigators said.

The homeowners heard screaming, ran outside, pulled the burning shirt off the child and called 911.

The boy was taken by EMS to Children's Hospital where he remained on Friday. He is being treated for second and third degree burns covering more than 40% of his body, according to the sheriff's office.

It's not yet clear if anyone may face charges in the case.

Investigators by Child Protective Services and the sheriff's office are ongoing.

The name of the boy, identified as an Orion Township resident, was not released.
