(WWJ) A Southeast Michigan woman is behind bars after police say she tried to hire a hitman to kill her ex-husband.
Wendy Wein, 51, was arraigned in 1st District Court in Monroe County Tuesday on charges of Solicitation to Commit Murder and Illegal use of a Computer to Facilitate a Crime.
Michigan State Police say the investigation began after Wein contacted the fictitious website "www.rentahitman.com," which claims to offer hitmen to “solve problems.”
Wein completed a “service request form” on the site, according to investigators, and requested a consultation to help her with an “issue" — specifying that her ex-husband was the target of her problems.
With the help of officers from MANTIS and LAWNET, a state trooper posing as a hitman met with Wein last Friday in a parking lot in South Rockwood. It's alleged that the woman offered to pay the undercover cop $5,000 to murder her ex, who lives in another state, and paid up up-front for travel expenses.
That's when Wein was taken into custody.
No one was hurt.
The owner of www.rentahitman.com told police that, since he started the website in 2005, he has been contacted numerous times by people requesting murders, school shootings and even a baby abduction. He claims the website has been responsible for preventing over 130 murders because he refers all requests for hitmen over to law enforcement.
Wein, a South Rockwood resident, remains lodged in the he Monroe County Jail as the investigation continues. Anyone with further information is asked to call Det. Sgt. Michael Peterson of the MSP Monroe Post at 734-384-5308.
