NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A new poll of potential Democratic candidates for president in 2024 puts Gov. Andrew Cuomo at the top of the field.

The Canadian firm Leger asked voters for their first choice among Democrats for the election four years away, assuming this year's presumptive nominee Joe Biden is not on the ballot.

The poll shows the third-term governor as the top choice in every geographic region except the West Coast and he's also the favorite among voters over 30.

Cuomo called the poll "shocking," but said he believes it's an endorsement of what New Yorkers have done in beating back the coronavirus.

"The poll was shocking to me, frankly. The other people in the poll all ran for president, I don't know if you noticed but I didn't run for president, they were all bona fide presidential contenders.... So it was shocking to me, I think what that is, well it must be, from the briefings and from what New Yorkers did on COVID," Cuomo said on a conference call with reporters Friday. "And I applaud New Yorkers and I think it's reflective of the actions that New Yorkers took and possibly my rapier wit and just stunning sense of humor."

The 2024 Leger poll shows Cuomo leading this year's Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris by two points among Democrat respondents.

At the height of the COVID-19 outbreak, Cuomo's daily briefings were must-see TV for many, not just in New York, but across the country, as he provided vital information and connected with people stuck in their homes during an uncertain time.

His empathy and candor made Cuomo a nationwide star of the coronavirus crisis and one of the key faces responding to the pandemic.

His handling of the situation raised his approval rating at one point to 87% and the hashtag “Cuomo for President” even started trending across social media.

Cuomo is scheduled to speak at the Democratic National Convention next week.
