PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Having trouble falling asleep? Showering at the right time and temperature can help.
A nice warm shower or bath about an hour or two before bed will help your body temperature regulate to the ideal range for sleep, according to Dr. Rich Friedenheim, the medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Abington Hospital-Jefferson Health.
"When you leave your shower or bath, you actually have evaporation. Your hands, the soles of your body and that evaporation process actually results in you body cooling off, so your body is getting a head start in cooling off and that cooling off can signal melatonin which also promotes sleep," Friedenheim said.
He says the warm shower can also help you fall asleep an average of nine minutes faster.
And while taking a cold shower might feel better in the moment, it may not actually cool you off or be better for your sleep health. Dr. Friedenheim points out that a cool rinse-off before bed will actually make your body warmer and make sleep more difficult.
