Police: David Ortiz Possibly Targeted Incorrectly in Hit Job

Authorities are now saying David Ortiz may have fallen victim to a premeditated attack, though they are unsure if he was the intended target.

Dominican police spokesman Frank Felix Duran told CBS News it looks like Ortiz may have been the target of a hit job. But the possibility also exists that a member of Ortiz's entourage Sunday, urban singer Secreto, may have been the man whom the gunman was looking for. Dominican TV host Jhoel Lopez, who was also sitting with Ortiz, was hit in the leg by the same bullet. His injuries weren't life-threatening.

"We're not ruling out any scenario. What we can rule out is that this wasn't a robbery," Duran said.

Ortiz was shot at close range in the lower back in a crowded Dominican bar Sunday night. He underwent six hours of surgery and was transported back to Boston Monday. The slugger is recuperating at Mass General, where he underwent an additional "exploratory surgery" into early Tuesday morning.

Officials confirmed they have arrested one of the suspects involved in the shooting, though the gunman is still at large. At least two men approached the bar on a motor bike.

Video surfaced late Sunday of the captured suspect, Eddy Feliz Garcia, getting roughed up in the immediate aftermath of the attack. He is believed to be the getaway driver.

News reports out of the Dominican originally characterized the shooting as a "robbery," but surveillance video shows that clearly wasn't the case. U.S. law enforcement agencies are aiding Dominican officials in their investigation.
