Jimmy Kimmel will be facilitating a one-night-only recreation of two classic American sitcoms.
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel announced on his show Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday that he will be hosting a 90-minute special to honor classic TV sitcoms created by Norman Lear. The recreation of All in the Family and The Jeffersons will air on May 22nd on ABC.
Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s All in the Family and The Jeffersons will feature a star-studded cast including Woody Harrelson, Marisa Tomei, Jamie Foxx, Wanda Sykes, and more playing all of the iconic sitcom characters.
Kimmel said of the upcoming live event, “The fact that a group of Oscar winners eagerly agreed to play these iconic characters is a testament to the greatness of these shows and their creator, Norman Lear.”
Lear released his own statement about the endeavor saying, "They have said over and over again that these two shows were meant for the ’70s and would not work today. We disagree with them and are here to prove, with two great casts depicting All in the Family and The Jeffersons, the timelessness of human nature. I cannot wait to see what these glorious performers make in our time of these indelible characters.”
Kimmel has yet to reveal the particular episodes that will be recreated, but fans of the show are excited for anything the live event could throw at them. The Jeffersons was a spin-off of All in the Family and included the first prominently-featured interracial couple in television series history, adding to its legacy.
The show went on to handle social issues remarkably during its ten-year run and gave a platform for African American actors to shine. Between the two series, there were over two dozen Emmy Award nominations.
