A historic remnant of World War II has been found after sinking more than 76 years ago.

The R/V Petrel discovered the wreck of the USS Hornet -- an aircraft carrier that was sunk during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in 1942.

The Petrel captured these amazing images of the ship resting on the ocean floor of the South Pacific.

The Hornet played a vital role in the Doolittle Raid and the historic Battle of Midway.

It was the victim of an attack by Japanese dive-bombers and torpedo planes during the war.

140 sailors tragically died in the attack.
